How to reverse a MoMo transaction in Ghana after a wrong transfer
Sent MoMo to the wrong number? Act fast. In Ghana you can attempt a self-service reversal via *170#, then escalate by calling support with the transaction ID. Here are the exact steps, the 'reversal' scam to avoid, and how to prevent it next time.
1. The self-service reversal (*170#)
On MTN MoMo, open the menu by dialling *170#, then go to My Wallet (option 6). Look for the reverse / last transaction option as it appears in the menu, select the wrong transaction and confirm with your PIN. The operator may reshuffle the menu; follow the on-screen wording rather than a memorised path.
2. Escalate to customer care
If the automatic reversal fails, call MTN customer care on 100. Have the transaction ID (on your confirmation SMS), the amount, the date and the recipient's number ready. The operator can place a hold on the funds while it investigates. For Telecel Cash and AT Money, contact their official customer care or app - we do not publish an unverified number here.
⚠️ The reversal scam
Fraudsters call pretending to be customer care and ask you to 'approve a reversal', dial a code, or share your PIN. Never do this. An operator will never ask you to approve a transaction or dial a code to 'receive' a reversal - approving such a request actually sends YOUR money to the fraudster. Never share your PIN. If in doubt, hang up and call the official number yourself.
3. Prevent it next time
Before confirming a send, check the recipient's registered name that the menu shows: if it does not match, cancel. Type the number digit by digit rather than pasting, and send a small test amount first to a new recipient. These habits prevent almost all wrong transfers.
