Levy abolished

The 1% Electronic Transfer Levy was abolished on 2 April 2025 by President Mahama. No government levy currently applies to mobile money transactions in Ghana.

MTN MoMo channels: app, USSD and agent

You can manage MTN MoMo in three ways. By USSD, dial *170# to open the menu (balance, send, cash-out, PIN change) — no internet needed, so it works on any phone. Through the MTN MoMo app, you get the same operations in a graphical interface. And at an authorised agent, you deposit or withdraw cash. Fees are identical on every channel: the operator's schedule applies, not a per-channel surcharge.

The cash-out consolidation tip

MTN MoMo cash-out is free under GH₵50, about 1% after, then capped at a flat GH₵20 above GH₵2,000. Because that cap never moves, withdrawing GH₵5,000 costs the same GH₵20 as GH₵2,001, and so does GH₵10,000. If you must take out a large sum, one big withdrawal above GH₵2,000 beats several small ones.

Sending to another network

Thanks to national interoperability, you can send from MTN MoMo to MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money with just the recipient's number. The cross-network send fee closely tracks the same-network schedule, especially above GH₵1,000, and the recipient always receives for free.

Compare, agents and popular amounts

All three Ghanaian operators use a near-identical cash-out schedule, so the choice comes down to agent density and your recipient's network. Important: an agent should never charge cash on top of the fee deducted from your wallet — any surcharge is prohibited. Agent charges →

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does MTN MoMo charge to send money in Ghana?

MTN MoMo is free up to GH₵100 per transaction, then about 0.75% to GH₵1,000, then a flat GH₵7.50 above that. Receiving is always free.

What are the MTN MoMo cash-out fees in Ghana?

Cash-out is free under GH₵50, about 1% from GH₵50 to GH₵2,000, then capped at a flat GH₵20 above GH₵2,000. So a GH₵5,000 withdrawal costs the same GH₵20 as a GH₵2,001 one — consolidating large withdrawals saves money.

Is there a government levy on MTN MoMo in Ghana?

No. The 1% government e-levy was repealed on 2 April 2025 and remains repealed. You pay only operator fees (send, cash-out), no state tax.

How do I use MTN MoMo: app or USSD?

Two channels. By USSD, dial *170# for the menu (balance, send, cash-out, PIN), with no internet. Or use the MTN MoMo app for the same in a graphical interface. Fees are identical on either channel.

Can I send from MTN MoMo to another network?

Yes. National interoperability links MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money in real time: you just need the recipient's phone number. The cross-network send fee is close to same-network in the higher bands. See our cross-network transfers page.

Is MTN MoMo the cheapest in Ghana?

For cash-out, all three operators use a near-identical schedule, so the choice is mostly about agent density. For same-network sending, Telecel Cash is free. Use the calculator on the Ghana page to compare a specific amount.
