About the Euro
The Euro (EUR, €) is the official currency of 20 European Union member states and the anchor of one of the most consequential fixed-peg arrangements in African monetary history. The Euro is issued by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and is the second-largest reserve currency after the USD. Two African monetary unions — the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA / XOF) and the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC / XAF) — peg their CFA francs to the EUR at the fixed rate of 655.957 CFA = 1 EUR. The peg has been in continuous operation since the 1999 introduction of the Euro, and replaced the prior French franc peg. For diaspora remitters in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Germany, the EUR is the dominant send currency for the WAEMU and CEMAC corridors.
About the West African CFA Franc
The West African CFA Franc (XOF, FCFA) is the official currency of the eight UEMOA member states — Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Niger and Guinea-Bissau. It is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and pegged to the Euro at the fixed rate of 655.957 XOF per 1 EUR — the same parity as the Central African XAF, though the two are not interchangeable. The fixed peg has held continuously since the Euro's launch in 1999. Since 30 September 2025, BCEAO's PI-SPI regional instant-payment system has made individual transfers free and instant across all 8 UEMOA wallets, dramatically reducing the cost of remitting XOF within the union for ordinary users. EUR-XOF flows from the French, Belgian and Italian diaspora are by far the largest UEMOA inbound corridor.
How to send Euro to WAEMU zone
For transfers from Eurozone to WAEMU zone, the competitive options in 2026 are mobile-first remitters (Sendwave, LemFi, TapTap Send, Lemonade Finance), aggregators (Wise, WorldRemit, Remitly) and direct operator rails (MTN MoMo, Orange Money, M-Pesa Global). All-in cost depends on amount, receiving wallet and day. Compare options side by side on our WAEMU zone inbound corridor page.
See the WAEMU zone inbound corridor comparison →The EUR/XOF rate is fixed by a long-standing peg arrangement at exactly 655.957 XOF per 1 EUR. The peg has held without devaluation since the Euro's introduction on 1 January 1999, and replaced the prior 100 XOF = 1 French franc parity. It is enforced operationally by the French Treasury, which provides a convertibility guarantee to the BCEAO. Mobile-money operators sending EUR to UEMOA wallets via the WAEMU PI-SPI rail therefore face essentially no FX-rate uncertainty — the only variable cost is the operator's send fee plus any country-level withdrawal tax.
