Are the West and Central African CFA francs (XOF, XAF) the same?

Same value, not interchangeable. The West African CFA franc (XOF) and the Central African CFA franc (XAF) are both pegged to the euro at the same rate — 655.957 per €1 — so 1 XOF = 1 XAF in value. But XOF is legal tender only in the UEMOA/WAEMU zone and XAF only in the CEMAC zone: you cannot spend one in the other's region.

Because the rate is fixed, the only variable is the transfer cost. Compare sending fees →

What moves the Franc CFA rate

The Central-African CFA franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed 655.957, like the XOF but not interchangeable. The rate is stable against the euro and tracks EUR/USD against the dollar; CEMAC-zone oil receipts weigh on reserves.

About the Franc CFA

The Central African CFA Franc (XAF, FCFA) is the official currency of the six CEMAC member states — Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) and pegged to the Euro at the fixed rate of 655.957 XAF per 1 EUR. The CFA is theoretically subdivided into 100 centimes, though the centime is no longer in active use. Despite sharing the CFA name, the XAF and the West African XOF are not interchangeable: cross-border payments between the two zones require an FX conversion at the BEAC-BCEAO interbank rate. For mobile-money inflows to MTN MoMo Cameroon and Orange Money in the CEMAC zone, EUR-to-XAF flows benefit from the fixed peg, while USD and GBP flows must cross EUR before converting.

About the Franc CFA

The West African CFA Franc (XOF, FCFA) is the official currency of the eight UEMOA member states — Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Niger and Guinea-Bissau. It is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and pegged to the Euro at the fixed rate of 655.957 XOF per 1 EUR — the same parity as the Central African XAF, though the two are not interchangeable. The fixed peg has held continuously since the Euro's launch in 1999. Since 30 September 2025, BCEAO's PI-SPI regional instant-payment system has made individual transfers free and instant across all 8 UEMOA wallets, dramatically reducing the cost of remitting XOF within the union for ordinary users. EUR-XOF flows from the French, Belgian and Italian diaspora are by far the largest UEMOA inbound route.
