How to reverse a MoMo transfer in Uganda — the right way

Verified June 2026.Live MTN/Airtel Uganda tariffs + URA rate confirmed.

Step-by-step in the first hour

  1. Keep the MTN/Airtel confirmation SMS: it has the timestamp and reference number — essential evidence.
  2. If you know the recipient (one-digit error), call or message them calmly. Many errors resolve here by amicable agreement.
  3. If no response or the recipient is unknown, immediately call your operator customer care (100 at MTN or Airtel) and report the error.
  4. Give the agent: your number, wrong recipient number, exact amount, time, and SMS reference number.
  5. The operator tries to freeze the balance on the recipient's wallet. If frozen in time, the return is quick. If the money is already withdrawn, the operator can do no more — it becomes a civil dispute.

How to AVOID transfer mistakes

  • Always read the person's name on the USSD confirmation screen before entering the PIN. MTN MoMo displays the registered full name on the recipient number.
  • For recurring transfers, save the number in your phonebook with a clear label ('John MTN', 'Mary Airtel').
  • For large amounts, do a small test transfer (UGX 5,000) first to confirm the number, then send the rest.
  • Avoid sending while walking or talking to someone — a one-digit error is easy when multitasking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel a MoMo transfer in Uganda?
Once the transfer is validated by PIN and confirmed by SMS, you cannot cancel it directly. The procedure depends on the recipient's cooperation and operator customer-care intervention. The faster you act, the higher the recovery chance.
How long to react?
Ideally within 60 minutes. If the recipient has not yet withdrawn cash or spent via MoMo Pay, the operator can freeze the balance and start a recovery procedure. After 24h, if the recipient has cashed out, recovery becomes a civil matter.
How do I contact MTN customer care?
Dial 100 from an MTN number (free) or +256312120000 from another network. Email: customercare.ug@mtn.com. Provide: your number, the wrong recipient number, the amount, transfer time, and the reference number (visible on your MTN SMS).
And at Airtel Money?
Dial 100 from an Airtel number (free). Email: airtelmoneycare.ug@africa.airtel.com. Same info to provide: wrong recipient number, amount, Airtel Money SMS reference.
Can the recipient refuse to return the money?
Legally, keeping money that is not yours is unjust enrichment — a civil offence. But practically, if the person refuses and has already cashed out, you will need to file a complaint with Uganda police and pursue civil action. Long and uncertain. Hence the importance of fast action — before the recipient disposes of the funds.
