How USSD works in Madagascar

A USSD code is a short sequence (for example #111#) you dial like a phone number. It opens an interactive menu carried over the cellular network — no internet connection or app required. This is why MVola, Orange Money and Airtel Money work on any phone, anywhere there is signal.

Each operator maps to phone prefixes: Telma (MVola) uses 034 and 038, Orange (Orange Money) uses 032 and 037, and Airtel (Airtel Money) uses 033. You always dial your own operator's code from the line linked to your mobile money account.

We publish only confirmed direct codes here. Where no direct shortcut is officially published for a task, we say 'via the menu' rather than inventing a code. Some Airtel variants circulating online (for example *436*5# or *436*6#) were not confirmed and so are not listed here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Orange Money balance in Madagascar?
Dial #321# directly to display your Orange Money balance without going through the full menu. You can also dial #144#, the main menu, then pick the balance option. The code routes over the Orange cellular network (prefixes 032 and 037) with no internet needed — a USSD session does not use mobile data.
What is the code to transfer money?
It depends on your operator. On MVola (Telma), dial #111*1*2# to go straight to send-money, or #111# and follow the menu. On Orange Money, dial #144# and choose 'Transfert d'argent'. On Airtel Money, dial *436# for the menu, or *436*2*1*1# to send directly to another Airtel Money wallet. Then enter the recipient's number, the amount, and confirm with your secret PIN.
How do I check my Airtel Money balance?
Dial *436# to open the Airtel Money menu, then select 'Solde' or 'Mon compte'. Airtel has not always published a single direct balance shortcut — use the menu, which always reflects current operations. The code works on the Airtel network (prefix 033).
What is the MVola code to send money?
On MVola, the base code is #111# (the Telma menu). To go straight to the MVola service dial #111*1#, and for send-money #111*1*2#. Enter the recipient's number (a Telma 034 or 038 line), the amount, then confirm with your MVola PIN.
Do USSD codes work without internet in Madagascar?
Yes. USSD runs over the cellular (GSM) signalling network, not mobile data. You can check your balance, send money and buy airtime with no data plan or Wi-Fi, on a basic phone or a smartphone alike. This is what makes MVola, Orange Money and Airtel Money usable across the whole country.
Why isn't my USSD code working?
Common causes: you are dialling a different operator's code from your line (check your prefix — 034/038 Telma, 032/037 Orange, 033 Airtel), your mobile money account is not activated, weak network signal, or the operator changed its menu. If the menu changed, dial the base code (#111#, #144# or *436#) and follow the on-screen options — the menu always reflects current operations.
