MTN MoPesa Uganda — the MoMo loan and savings product via *165*45#

MoPesa is MTN Uganda's MoMo-backed loan and savings product, accessible via *165*45#. It works as a short-term advance: your eligibility and limit depend on your MoMo history (volume, regularity, wallet age). Total cost includes a facilitation fee and repayment is automatically deducted from the wallet at term — here is how it works and what it actually costs.

MoPesa vs other short-term credit options in Uganda

MoPesa's main advantage is speed and absence of formality: no guarantor, no branch visit, no paperwork. It is designed to plug a short cash gap (urgent payment before payday, family emergency). For larger amounts or longer durations, SACCOs, Ugandan commercial banks (Stanbic, Centenary, dfcu) and microfinance institutions usually offer better rates but require more documentation.

The classic MoPesa trap: using it for non-essential purchases because it is easy. The effective fee over 30 days can look small in absolute terms, but annualised it is high. Reserve MoPesa for real emergencies, not impulse shopping.

Frequently asked questions

Who can borrow via MoPesa?
You need an active MTN MoMo Uganda wallet for at least 6 months, with regular activity (sends, deposits, MoMo Pay payments). The system automatically assigns a borrowing limit based on your history — no form, no guarantor, no extra document. Dial *165*45# to see your current limit.
What is the typical borrowing limit?
For a new eligible user, the limit usually starts between UGX 5,000 and UGX 50,000. With regular use and on-time repayment, the limit gradually rises and can reach several hundred thousand UGX for long-time users. The current maximum available shows at the start of the *165*45# menu.
How much does a MoPesa loan cost?
MoPesa applies a facilitation fee clearly shown on-screen before you confirm the loan — typically a percentage of the borrowed amount for the loan term (often 30 days). ALWAYS check the total-to-repay displayed in the USSD confirmation screen before entering the PIN, since exact terms can change. No hidden fees beyond what is shown.
How does repayment work?
Repayment is automatic: at term, MTN debits your wallet balance for the repayment amount. If the balance is insufficient, MTN retries on following days until full recovery. You can also repay manually before term via the *165*45# menu (repay option) — useful to stay eligible and grow your limit.
What happens if I don't repay on time?
First impact: your borrowing limit is frozen or reduced. Second impact: late fees may apply depending on delay length. Long term: MTN shares data with Uganda credit bureaus (CRB), which can affect your ability to borrow elsewhere. To avoid this, repay before or at term via *165*45#, or fund your wallet before the date so the auto-debit passes.
Does MoPesa also offer savings?
Yes. The *165*45# menu includes a savings option (Save) that temporarily locks part of your wallet against a small return. Useful for short-term savings discipline — and having savings activity strengthens your borrower profile. Return and term details are displayed at the time of the operation.
