When wallet-to-bank makes sense

To move funds into a savings or operating bank account, the wallet-to-bank channel is generally cheaper than a cash withdrawal followed by an in-branch deposit. For UGX 500,000, a MoMo-to-bank transfer costs UGX 4,100 + UGX 615 VAT = UGX 4,715, against UGX 10,550 for an agent cash withdrawal (with URA tax). Saving: about UGX 5,800.

The other reason to prefer this channel: for rent, salary or supplier payments, the bank trail is useful for accounting and receipts. The MTN SMS confirms the transaction, the bank statement reflects it — double trail.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a MoMo-to-bank transfer cost in Uganda?
On MTN MoMo Uganda: flat UGX 1,500 on bands under UGX 125,000, then UGX 2,250 up to 250,000, UGX 4,100 up to 500,000, UGX 6,150 up to 1,000,000, UGX 9,250 up to 2,000,000, and UGX 11,300 above. 15% VAT on these fees adds on. No URA tax.
Why does the URA tax not apply?
The 0.5% URA tax is defined on cash WITHDRAWALS. A bank-account transfer is not a cash withdrawal — the money stays in the digital system. Uganda's Excise Duty Act does not include it in the scope.
Which banks does MTN MoMo Uganda support?
MTN MoMo Uganda supports direct transfers to most Ugandan commercial banks: Centenary, Stanbic, dfcu, Equity, Absa, KCB, Standard Chartered, Bank of Africa, and others. The function is available via the MTN MoMo app or via *165*4# (Bank Services).
Does the bank recipient pay a fee?
The receiving bank may apply a small entry fee (often UGX 500–1,000) per its own tariff. Separate from MTN fees. Check with your bank for inbound mobile-money transfer charges.
How long does the transfer take?
Near-instant. Most MTN MoMo to bank transfers are credited in under 5 minutes. Transfers to minor banks or outside banking hours can take up to 24h.
