MTN MoMo & Airtel Money Uganda withdrawal charges (2026)

Withdrawing cash from a MoMo wallet in Uganda combines THREE costs: the operator fee (MTN or Airtel based on the band), the 0.5% URA tax on the withdrawn amount, and 15% VAT on the operator fee. Here is the full verified schedule — and the real all-in cost for each band.

Here is the schedule MTN Uganda publishes for agent and ATM withdrawals. ATM bands stop at UGX 1,000,000 — above that, only agents can dispense.

Real all-in cost by band

The operator fee is only part of the story. Here, band by band, is the TOTAL COST including the 0.5% URA tax and 15% VAT, computed live.

Wave — the near-zero-fee alternative

Wave Uganda came into the market positioning itself explicitly as the low-fee challenger. For withdrawals, Wave's schedule is typically 30-50% cheaper than MTN/Airtel on medium bands. The 0.5% URA tax and 15% VAT still apply — no operator can escape them. But the operator component itself can be much lower at Wave.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a MoMo withdrawal cost in Uganda in 2026?
The total cost is the SUM of three components: the operator fee (between UGX 330 and UGX 20,000 depending on the band), 0.5% URA tax on the withdrawn value, and 15% VAT on the operator fee. For UGX 50,000 withdrawn at MTN, the total is UGX 1,975. For UGX 1,000,000 the total is UGX 19,375.
Which operator has the lowest withdrawal fees?
For withdrawals under UGX 30,000, MTN MoMo and Airtel Money charge similar fees. For very small withdrawals (under UGX 5,000), MTN is usually slightly cheaper. The 0.5% URA tax and 15% VAT are identical across operators — the gap is on the operator fee alone.
Why does an ATM withdrawal sometimes cost more than an agent withdrawal?
On low bands (below UGX 5,000), an MTN ATM withdrawal costs UGX 1,150 versus UGX 440 at an agent — the ATM is more expensive. On medium bands (UGX 60,001–250,000), ATM costs slightly more than agent. On high bands (above UGX 1M), many ATMs simply cannot dispense the amount — you have to go through an agent.
Is the operator fee on top of my amount, or deducted from my balance?
Deducted from the wallet balance. When you withdraw UGX 100,000, the agent gives you UGX 100,000 cash, and your MoMo balance drops by UGX 100,000 + fee + tax + VAT. The agent has NOTHING to collect from you in addition — demanding a 'little something' is overcharging, prohibited by MTN/Airtel rules.
How do I reduce my MoMo withdrawal fees?
Three levers. First, consolidate: one UGX 500,000 withdrawal costs UGX 10,550 total; two UGX 250,000 withdrawals cost UGX 8,615 each, or UGX 17,230 — about 60% more. Second, pay merchants via MoMo Pay (*165*3#) instead of withdrawing cash — no tax, no withdrawal fee. Third, compare agent vs ATM for your band: on small amounts, agent is better.
