Uganda cross-network transfers — MTN, Airtel, Wave interoperability

Sending between MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and Wave in Uganda uses the national interoperability activated in 2022. The fee is close to same-network on higher bands, slightly higher on small ones. The recipient receives for free, as always.

Uganda's interoperability context

Before 2022, sending from MTN MoMo to Airtel Money required the recipient to have an intermediary bank account, or a third-party transfer service. The national interoperability rail, activated in 2022 under Bank of Uganda supervision, removed this detour. Today, from any licensed Ugandan wallet, you send to any mobile number in seconds.

Practical cost cross-network vs same-network

For the vast majority of transfers (above UGX 60,000), the fee is identical: if MTN charges UGX 1,000 on the band, it is UGX 1,000 to MTN, Airtel or Wave. On very small bands (under UGX 5,000), a slight surcharge may apply per each operator's policy, typically UGX 50–100.

Always compare the final fee in the USSD confirmation screen before validating the PIN — it shows the exact amount that will be deducted.

Frequently asked questions

Is cross-network more expensive in Uganda?
Not really since 2022. National interoperability aligned the same-network and cross-network schedules. For bands above UGX 60,000, the gap is typically UGX 0–100. On very small bands it can be more visible.
Does the recipient pay a fee on cross-network?
No. Receiving is free, whatever the sender's network. The MoMo recipient sees the credit appear normally, with no fee. Cost is entirely on the sender side.
How do I send to an Airtel number from MTN?
Dial *165*1# (MTN send), enter the recipient's Airtel number (starting with 070, 075, 074), enter the amount and your MoMo PIN. The system automatically detects the Airtel number and routes via interoperability. SMS confirmation within seconds.
Is Wave integrated into interoperability?
Yes, Wave Uganda is connected to the national interoperability rail. You can send from MTN MoMo or Airtel Money to a Wave number (and vice versa). Operator fees remain those of the sending network.
Does the URA tax apply on cross-network?
No on the send — the tax is on withdrawals only. If the recipient later withdraws the received funds in cash, the 0.5% URA tax will apply on that withdrawal, like any MoMo withdrawal.
