MTN MoMo Rwanda app download — Play Store, App Store, the activation flow

The MTN MoMo Rwanda app downloads from Google Play (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS) — search 'MyMTN' or 'MoMo'. Sign in with your MTN number linked to the wallet, verify by SMS, set the app PIN (distinct from the 4-digit USSD PIN). The app reproduces *182# with screen comfort; USSD stays available without data. You can use both in parallel.

Activating the wallet in MyMTN

  1. Download 'MyMTN' from Google Play or App Store. Verify the publisher (MTN Group / MTN Rwanda) and download count.
  2. Open the app, select 'Rwanda' as the country.
  3. Enter your MTN number (format +250 78X XXX XXX). This is the number linked to your wallet.
  4. The app sends a verification code by SMS — enter it on the next screen.
  5. Set a 4-6 digit app PIN (distinct from the USSD PIN). Enable biometric if supported.
  6. The MoMo module appears on the main screen. The first time, the app may ask to confirm your MoMo USSD PIN to activate wallet functions — that's normal.

App vs USSD — when to use which

  • App better: full history, PDF export, merchant QR scan (fast MoMoPay), push notifications, beneficiary book management.
  • USSD better: works without data, without a smartphone, without an Android battery (basic black-and-white phone). Essential offline, on a dead battery, or on a secondary phone.
  • Tie: sends, withdrawals, payments, balance check, REG/WASAC bills — USSD in a few key presses, app in a few taps.
  • Tip: install the app, keep USSD as a safety net. Kigali coverage is strong; in rural areas and at Volcans/Akagera parks, USSD stays more reliable.

Frequently asked questions

What's the actual app name to search for?
On Google Play and App Store, search 'MyMTN' — the official MTN Group app combining mobile account, top-up and MoMo. Publisher: MTN Group or local subsidiary MTN Rwanda. The official icon is yellow and black (MTN colours), with several million downloads. Beware of imitations with similar icons.
Do I need a separate app for MoMo?
No. MyMTN includes the MoMo module in the main app. If a separate 'MTN MoMo' app shows up in Play Store, it's likely an older version — the current version is consolidated in MyMTN.
Does the app cost mobile data?
Yes, but little. MTN Rwanda usually offers free (zero-rated) access to MyMTN on the MTN network, so data cost is zero or minimal for MTN users. On WiFi it's also free. *182# USSD costs nothing either, so when in doubt (weak signal, depleted data), fall back to USSD.
Is the app more secure than USSD?
Differently secured. The app uses HTTPS + app PIN + biometric auth (fingerprint/Face ID if the phone supports it). USSD uses a 4-digit PIN and the operator channel. The real risk in both cases: don't share the PIN. The app adds protection against SIM swap.
Do KYC tiers change in the app?
No. Identity verification tiers and limits (RWF 10,000,000/day for a fully verified wallet) are identical between USSD and app. The app just makes it easier to see your current status and submit documents to step up a tier.
And for Airtel Money — which app?
For Airtel Money Rwanda, the equivalent app is 'Airtel Thanks', available on Google Play and App Store. Publisher: Airtel Africa. Same logic: USSD (*500#) stays available in parallel. If you have both wallets, install both apps — useful to compare balances and start cross-network transfers.
