How to reset your MTN MoMo PIN in Rwanda — the verified path

To reset your MTN MoMo PIN in Rwanda, three paths: *182# → My Account → Change PIN (if you know the old PIN); call 100 (free from MTN) if you've forgotten it; or visit an MTN Service Centre with your Indangamuntu (national ID). Free, no SIM swap, and the new PIN replaces the old one immediately.

Verified June 2026.MTN Rwanda USSD codes and procedures verified against official sources. No tariffs are quoted on this page.

Method 1 — USSD (fastest)

  1. Dial *182# on your MTN phone.
  2. Select 'My Account' then 'Change PIN' (or 'Reset PIN' if forgotten).
  3. If changing: enter the old PIN, then the new one (twice to confirm). If resetting: answer security questions, then set the new PIN.
  4. You receive a confirmation SMS. The new PIN is active immediately.

Method 2 — Call 100

If USSD fails, call 100 from your MTN number (free). The agent will ask for: your number, registered wallet name, Indangamuntu, and a recent transaction detail (date, amount, recipient). After verification, the agent resets the PIN remotely; you receive a temporary PIN by SMS, to change immediately via *182#.

Method 3 — MTN Service Centre with Indangamuntu

For complex cases (loss of multiple identifiers, number change, business account with multiple signatories), visit an MTN Service Centre — available in Kigali (Nyarugenge, Kacyiru, Kimironko, Remera) and every district capital. Present your Indangamuntu or passport. The agent verifies identity, updates the profile if needed, and resets the PIN on the spot — 10 to 20 minutes depending on the queue.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the reset take?
Via *182# with the old PIN it's instant — you set the new 4-digit PIN and it's active immediately. Via 100, expect 5-10 minutes of identity verification with the agent. At a branch, expect 10-20 minutes depending on the queue. No waiting period after reset: you can transact straight away.
What if I've forgotten the old PIN?
The *182# menu offers identity verification via security questions (registered date of birth, last transaction, etc.). If verification succeeds, you can set a new PIN on the spot. If it fails, call 100 or visit a branch with your Indangamuntu.
Is my account locked after multiple wrong attempts?
Yes. After three wrong PIN attempts, MTN MoMo temporarily locks the wallet (typically 15-30 minutes). After five attempts, the lock is longer and requires reset. While locked, you cannot send, withdraw, or pay; receiving still works. Standard anti-fraud measure.
Are there any fees?
No. PIN reset is free on all three channels (USSD, call 100, branch). If someone asks for money or a MoMo transfer to 'unlock' your account, it's fraud — MTN never charges for this. Never pay and report immediately to 100.
What about Airtel Money?
On Airtel Money, dial *500# → My Account → Change PIN, or call 100 (free from Airtel) if you've forgotten. The process is analogous to MTN: identity verification, new 4-digit PIN, free.
