How to check your MoMo balance in Rwanda — MTN and Airtel

Checking your MoMo balance in Rwanda is free and takes three USSD inputs. On MTN MoMo: *182# → My Account → Check Balance. On Airtel Money: *500# → My Account → Balance. The MoMo app shows the balance on open if you're signed in. The check costs nothing and doesn't affect your balance or limits.

Three methods — pick the one that suits

  • MTN USSD : *182# → My Account → Check Balance → enter your PIN. Balance shown in 5 seconds.
  • Airtel USSD : *500# → My Account → Balance → enter your PIN.
  • MoMo / MyMTN app : open the app, authenticate (PIN or biometric), balance shows at the top of the page. Handy if you also want to see transaction history.

Why USSD still matters in Rwanda

Even with growing smartphone penetration, MoMo USSD remains the most universal tool: it works on any phone (feature phones included), no data, no smartphone battery, and survives short network blips. For critical transactions (emergency, receipt verification, merchant payment at the counter), USSD is the safety net — keep it as a reflex even if you mainly use the app.

Frequently asked questions

Does checking the balance cost anything?
No. The USSD session is free and the balance check is not counted as a transaction — no fee, no debit. You can check your balance as often as you want. Same in the MoMo app if you're signed in.
How many digits does a Rwanda MoMo balance have?
The balance shows in whole RWF (no cents — RWF has no decimal subdivision in practice). The fully-KYC-verified wallet cap is RWF 10,000,000 (10 million) — beyond that, you can't receive or hold more until the balance drops. For business volumes, MoMoPay Tier 2 has higher caps.
The balance is not up to date, what should I do?
If you just received a transfer and the displayed balance doesn't reflect it, wait 30-60 seconds (confirmation SMS can lag the balance SMS). If after several minutes the balance doesn't match the received SMS, dial 100 (MTN customer care, free) with the transaction ID from the SMS.
Can I check the balance from abroad?
Yes, if your MTN Rwanda SIM is active in roaming. *182# USSD works over roaming (roaming costs may apply on the airtime side per your plan, but the MoMo USSD itself stays free). The MoMo app works anywhere with any data connection — often more convenient when traveling.
