How the recipient receives

📱 Mobile wallet

MVola, Orange Money or Airtel Money — credited within minutes, to the phone number. Free to receive.

🏧 Cash pickup

At a Western Union / MoneyGram or mobile money agent, with photo ID.

🏦 Bank deposit

Needs the bank's RIB and SWIFT code — see RIB / SWIFT.

💡 What the recipient actually pays

Receiving the money into the wallet is free. The only cost on the Madagascar side is cash-OUT: each operator charges a fee by amount band, deducted from the wallet. Example: on an amount credited to MVola, if the recipient withdraws it all in cash at an agent, they pay the withdrawal fee for that amount band; if they keep it on the wallet to pay bills and purchases, they pay nothing.

The euro → ariary rate (EUR → MGA)

The final amount received depends as much on the EUR→MGA rate as on the visible fee. The ariary is counted in thousands: a small rate gap visibly changes the amount received. Compare the live rate before sending.

Note: Malagasy mobile wallets have a balance cap (around 20 million ariary) and some amounts use a coupon system — for large transfers, a bank deposit may be a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I send money from Réunion to Madagascar?
Choose a transfer app (Western Union, Remitly, Taptap Send, Wise, MoneyGram, Global Transfert Océan Indien), create a verified account, enter the recipient's phone number for mobile wallet delivery or their RIB for a bank deposit. You pay in euros; the recipient gets ariary (MGA). Sends to an MVola, Orange Money or Airtel Money wallet usually arrive within minutes.
How do I send money to MVola from France?
Western Union and Remitly send directly to an MVola wallet: pick 'mobile money delivery', choose MVola, enter the recipient's Telma number (034 or 038), the amount in euros, and confirm. The money lands on the MVola wallet, often within minutes. The recipient can then spend it directly or cash out at an agent.
Is Western Union available in Madagascar?
Yes. Western Union operates in Madagascar both for cash pickup at partner locations and for direct delivery to MVola, Orange Money and Airtel Money mobile wallets. It is one of the most widely used options for the Malagasy diaspora, though fees vary by amount and channel.
How much does a transfer to Madagascar cost?
It depends on the app and channel. Advertised fees range from about €0 (running promotions, such as Taptap Send's verified in June 2026) to €5–15+ at Western Union by amount. Beyond the visible fee, also compare the EUR→MGA exchange RATE: a 'free' service with a poor rate can cost more than a low-fee service at the mid-market rate like Wise. Always compare the final ariary amount received before sending.
What does the recipient in Madagascar pay?
Receiving money into a mobile wallet (MVola, Orange Money, Airtel Money) is free. The recipient's cost comes at cash-OUT at an agent: each operator charges a withdrawal fee by amount band, deducted from the wallet. If they keep the money on the wallet to pay for purchases or bills, there is no withdrawal fee. See the MVola grid for the per-band detail.
