Ghana MoMo to bank transfers: what it costs and how to do it
Moving money between your MoMo wallet and a bank account in Ghana is free today. The 0.75% fee (capped at GH₵5) MTN announced for wallet-to-bank transfers was suspended by the Bank of Ghana before it took effect. Here is how to do it in both directions, how long it takes, and the status to watch.
The current state: free today
Transfers from a MoMo wallet to a bank account (and back) are free today in Ghana. In May 2026, MTN announced a 0.75% operator fee, capped at GH₵5, on wallet-to-bank transfers; the Bank of Ghana suspended it the next day, pending consultation. It never took effect.
This page explains the mechanics. For the live status of the 0.75% proposal - suspended, implemented or withdrawn - and the timeline of the saga, see our dedicated tracker, which is updated the day of any decision.
Sending wallet to bank
On MTN MoMo: dial *170#, choose Transfer Money, then the 'to Bank Account' option. Select your bank, enter the account number and amount, check the displayed name, then confirm with your PIN. The same is available in the MTN MoMo app.
On Telecel Cash and AT Money: dial *110# (the menu opens by your SIM), choose Send Money, then the bank-account option, and follow the same steps. Always confirm the beneficiary name before you submit.
Loading your wallet from the bank
In the other direction, you can fund your MoMo wallet from a bank account. From your bank's app or online banking, choose the transfer to a mobile money wallet - often routed via GhIPSS and national interoperability - enter the recipient's MoMo number and the amount.
Bank-side fees depend on the institution: many banks make this transfer free or low-cost, but it varies. We do not invent a per-bank tariff - check the exact fee shown in your banking app before confirming.
Processing times
Transfers between wallet and bank are generally near-instant to fast. Depending on the bank's integration, crediting may appear within minutes, sometimes up to a few hours at peak times. Always keep the transaction ID from the confirmation SMS: it is what you provide to customer care if a transfer is delayed.
The two '0.75%s' not to confuse
Watch a common mix-up: there are two distinct 0.75% rates in Ghana. The first is the standard P2P send fee (about 0.75% on a wallet-to-wallet transfer above GH₵100) - real and in force. The second was the 0.75% operator fee on wallet-to-bank transfers, announced then suspended - it does not apply. They are two different things on two different transfer types.
