MTN MoMo PIN reset in Ghana — the fast, free path
Forgot your MoMo PIN in Ghana? Three paths to reset it: via USSD (*170# → My Wallet → Change PIN if you still know it), by phone (call 100, free from MTN), or at an MTN service centre with your Ghana Card. None of them costs a cedi.
If you still know your PIN (preventive change)
Change your PIN periodically as good hygiene — especially if you accidentally shared it. Procedure:
- *170# → My Wallet (6) → Change PIN.
- Enter your current PIN.
- Enter the new 4-digit PIN.
- Confirm the new PIN.
- Change is immediate. SMS confirmation.
Avoid obvious PINs (1234, your birthday, your phone number). Also avoid keeping the PIN written on the phone.
If you forgot — path 1, call 100
The fastest channel and the least travel-intensive. Call 100 from your MTN number (the call is free from MTN). Prepare: your Ghana Card, the MoMo number involved, and 5-10 quiet minutes. The agent verifies your identity (Ghana Card number, date of birth, last transaction) then pushes a temporary 4-digit PIN by SMS. Log into *170# with that temporary PIN and change it immediately.
If you forgot — path 2, MTN service centre
If 100 does not connect or you prefer face-to-face, go to your nearest MTN service centre. Bring your physical Ghana Card. The agent verifies your identity, scans the card, and pushes a temporary PIN while you wait. Allow 5-10 minutes once in line. The recommended path for business accounts or if you have lost access to the MoMo number.
Security: what MTN NEVER does
MTN will NEVER ask for your PIN by phone, SMS, WhatsApp or email — including for a PIN reset. If someone claiming to be 'MTN' asks for your current PIN, it is a scam. The only time MTN sends you a PIN is the temporary PIN at reset time — and that SMS always comes from the official MTN shortcode.
