MTN MoMo Ghana app — download, set up and what it adds over USSD

The MTN MoMo app (iOS + Android) is free and adds what *170# USSD cannot do: filtered history, MoMoPay QR scan, scheduled transfers, receipt sharing. USSD stays useful (no internet, anywhere). Here are the official download links + when to use the app vs *170#.

Verified June 2026.Figures from live operator tariffs; operators may revise their schedules.

What the app does that *170# cannot

  • Filtered history: see your transactions by date, by contact, by type (send/withdraw/MoMoPay). In USSD, only the 5-transaction mini-statement is available.
  • MoMoPay QR scan: scan a merchant QR instead of typing the code by hand. Faster and fewer errors.
  • Scheduled transfers: set up a recurring transfer (rent, salary, payment to a relative).
  • Receipt sharing: send proof of payment to your contact via WhatsApp or email directly from the app.
  • Virtual MoMo card: generate a Virtual Card by MoMo for online purchases (on sites accepting Visa or Mastercard).
  • Instant push notifications on every credit/debit — without depending on SMS.

When to use *170# despite the app

Three cases where USSD beats the app: (1) no internet or data exhausted — *170# works anywhere, app does not. (2) Low battery — *170# uses less energy than an app loading screens. (3) Borrowed or shared phone — you do not want to install the app on a phone that is not yours. USSD stays the universal tool.

App security

Download the app ONLY from the official App Store or Google Play. Many fake 'MTN MoMo Ghana' apps circulate on third-party stores and on WhatsApp as APKs — they steal PINs. The real app has publisher 'MTN Ghana' and more than 5 million downloads on Google Play.

Enable app lock by fingerprint or Face ID in settings — an extra layer that stops a thief from opening the app even if they have the phone unlocked.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I download the MTN MoMo Ghana app?
iOS: Apple App Store, search 'MTN MoMo Ghana' (publisher: MTN Ghana). Android: Google Play Store, search 'MTN MoMo Ghana'. The app is free. To activate, enter the MTN number hosting your wallet and confirm by SMS. No extra PIN — you use your existing MoMo PIN.
Does the app replace *170#?
No, it complements it. The app covers the standard transactions (send, MoMoPay, balance, history) and adds features missing from USSD: QR scan, scheduled transfers, mini-statements filterable by date, receipt sharing. But *170# works without internet, on any phone — the unmatched safety net.
Does the app cost data?
Very little — a few hundred KB per typical session. MTN does not charge special data for the MoMo app (it counts in your normal data plan). The confirmation SMS stays free for you, whatever the channel (app or USSD).
Do Telecel Cash and AT Money have apps?
Telecel: the MyTelecel app (which includes Telecel Cash). AT: the MyAirtelTigo app. Both on iOS + Android. Equivalent features to the MTN MoMo app. Official links: myairteltigo.com and telecel.com.gh.
Is it safe to use the app on public WiFi?
The app uses end-to-end TLS encryption — public WiFi is technically OK. But the risk is mostly physical security: never enter your PIN where someone is watching, and log out of the app after use if you are on a shared phone.
What if the app crashes?
First: force-close and restart the app. Then: update to the latest version (App Store / Play Store → MTN MoMo Ghana → Update). If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall. For urgent operations while waiting for the fix: use *170#, which does not depend on the app.
