Mobile money to bank charges in Tanzania 2026
Tanzanian wallets integrate with major banks for wallet-to-bank transfers via M-Pesa Pay Bank, Mixx by Yas → Bank, and Airtel Money → Bank. Operator fee + receiving-bank fee both apply.
How much does mobile money to bank cost in Tanzania?
In Tanzania a wallet-to-bank transfer costs your operator's Pay Bank fee plus any receiving-bank fee. The operator fee is tiered by amount and already includes the fiscal stack (10% excise + 18% VAT, ~1.298× the base fee), so the figure in the Pay Bank menu is tax-inclusive. There is no single flat rate — M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas and Airtel each publish their own tiers, and the menu shows the exact all-in fee before you confirm.
How the wallet-to-bank flow works
Each wallet's main USSD menu has a Pay Bank option — on M-Pesa it is *150*00#. Select the destination bank, enter the recipient's bank account number, enter the TSh amount, confirm PIN. The wallet SMS confirms the debit; the bank's SMS confirms the credit. Both are needed to support a dispute.
Bank to wallet (the reverse direction)
To move money the other way — from a bank account into an M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas or Airtel Money wallet — you start from your bank's own app or USSD and choose the mobile-money / wallet transfer option. Receiving into the wallet is typically free; the bank may charge its own outbound fee, which it shows before you confirm. This is the route to fund a wallet from salary or a bank balance without visiting an agent.
Worked example
Sending TSh 100,000 from M-Pesa to a CRDB or NMB account: open *150*00#, choose Pay Bank, pick the bank, enter the account number and amount. The menu displays the all-in fee (the operator's tier fee already multiplied by the 1.298 fiscal stack) before you press confirm. On a major partner bank the recipient's credit posts within seconds and both SMS receipts arrive immediately.
