What moves the Franc CFA rate

The Central-African CFA franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed 655.957, like the XOF but not interchangeable. The rate is stable against the euro and tracks EUR/USD against the dollar; CEMAC-zone oil receipts weigh on reserves.

About the Franc CFA

The Central African CFA Franc (XAF, FCFA) is the official currency of the six CEMAC member states — Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) and pegged to the Euro at the fixed rate of 655.957 XAF per 1 EUR. The CFA is theoretically subdivided into 100 centimes, though the centime is no longer in active use. Despite sharing the CFA name, the XAF and the West African XOF are not interchangeable: cross-border payments between the two zones require an FX conversion at the BEAC-BCEAO interbank rate. For mobile-money inflows to MTN MoMo Cameroon and Orange Money in the CEMAC zone, EUR-to-XAF flows benefit from the fixed peg, while USD and GBP flows must cross EUR before converting.

About the British Pound

The British Pound (GBP, £) is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the primary currency in which the UK-based African diaspora earns and sends. Issued by the Bank of England, the Pound is subdivided into 100 pence. The UK is one of the three largest remittance source markets for Africa, channelling several billion pounds a year primarily to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Somalia, and Zimbabwe. After the 2016 Brexit referendum the GBP traded substantially weaker against both USD and EUR, which compressed remittance values when measured in either dollars or recipient local currency. Mobile-first remitters serving the UK-Africa route — Sendwave, LemFi, TapTap Send, Lemonade Finance — typically post a GBP rate within 0.5%–2% of interbank, with the fee structure varying by amount and destination.
