About the British Pound
The British Pound (GBP, £) is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the primary currency in which the UK-based African diaspora earns and sends. Issued by the Bank of England, the Pound is subdivided into 100 pence. The UK is one of the three largest remittance source markets for Africa, channelling several billion pounds a year primarily to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Somalia, and Zimbabwe. After the 2016 Brexit referendum the GBP traded substantially weaker against both USD and EUR, which compressed remittance values when measured in either dollars or recipient local currency. Mobile-first remitters serving the UK-Africa corridor — Sendwave, LemFi, TapTap Send, Lemonade Finance — typically post a GBP rate within 0.5%–2% of interbank, with the fee structure varying by amount and destination.
About the Nigerian Naira
The Nigerian Naira (NGN, ₦) is the official currency of Nigeria, issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) since 1973 when it replaced the Nigerian pound. Subdivided into 100 kobo, the Naira is one of Africa's most-traded currencies and the principal medium of exchange for the continent's largest economy. Since the CBN's 2023 unification of the parallel and official exchange rate windows through what it calls the NAFEM mechanism, the Naira has traded under market-driven pricing rather than the previous administered peg. Nigeria receives an estimated 20 billion USD a year in formal remittances, and for inbound flows to MTN MoMo PSB, OPay, PalmPay and Moniepoint the published Naira rate is now typically within 1%-3% of the parallel market — a sharp narrowing compared to the 30%-60% gaps that prevailed before unification.
How to send British Pound to Nigeria
For transfers from United Kingdom to Nigeria, the competitive options in 2026 are mobile-first remitters (Sendwave, LemFi, TapTap Send, Lemonade Finance), aggregators (Wise, WorldRemit, Remitly) and direct operator rails (MTN MoMo, Orange Money, M-Pesa Global). All-in cost depends on amount, receiving wallet and day. Compare options side by side on our Nigeria inbound corridor page.
See the Nigeria inbound corridor comparison →The UK is one of the three largest sources of remittances to Nigeria, alongside the US and Italy. Annual GBP-NGN flows are estimated at several billion pounds, channelled primarily through Sendwave, LemFi, Lemonade Finance, TapTap Send and traditional players like Western Union and MoneyGram. The GBP-NGN cross is typically priced as GBP → USD → NGN at the operator level, which means the GBP-USD leg adds a small additional FX layer on top of the USD-NGN cost. Post-2023 unification of the Naira windows, the all-in GBP-to-NGN landed rate at competitive mobile-first remitters is generally within 0.5%-2% of the synthetic mid-market rate derived from GBP-USD and USD-NGN interbank quotes.
