🇹🇿 Withdraw TSh5,000 in Tanzania: fees by provider

TSh5,000 is one of the smallest amounts people move in Tanzania — roughly a daladala commute and lunch. Tanzania has a genuinely competitive field — Vodacom M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Mixx by Yas (ex Tigo Pesa, rebranded 26 November 2024) — landing money in Dar es Salaam and upcountry, with LUKU TANESCO as the dominant bill-pay use case.

At this size, Tanzania's fiscal stack (×1.298 on the operator fee) bites hardest in relative terms — Lipa Kwa Simu to the merchant till sidesteps the whole stack. At an effective 0% on the cheapest option (Halo), the fixed part bites hardest here — batching small sends or keeping the balance on the wallet saves the most.

Mobile Money Withdrawal Levy ("tozo"): Tanzania charges a banded government levy when you cash out at a mobile-money agent — from TZS 10 up to a maximum of TZS 2,000 at the top band. Sending money carries no levy. The transfer levy on bank↔wallet and inter-bank moves was scrapped on 1 October 2022; the withdrawal levy was kept, with its maximum cut to TZS 2,000.
