About Alibaba (BABA)
Chinese e-commerce & cloud
Alibaba is China's largest e-commerce and cloud-computing group, spanning the Taobao and Tmall marketplaces, Alibaba Cloud and a logistics arm. US and international investors hold it as an American depositary receipt (ADR) rather than the underlying Hong Kong or Chinese shares. It is the main way Western retail investors get exposure to Chinese consumer and cloud growth.
What moves the stock. Chinese consumer demand, cloud growth, Beijing's regulatory stance toward big tech and the risk attached to its US listing (ADR) drive the shares. They are more volatile than US mega-caps and sensitive to China-US tensions. Buybacks and a newer dividend have supported the stock.
Why African investors track it. A dollar way to get exposure to Chinese growth; among the local apps, it is offered by Trove.
Dividends. Alibaba pays an annual dividend (introduced in 2023) and buys back stock.
How to buy Alibaba shares from Africa
The available apps depend on your country — Nigeria and Ghana have the widest choice, while Kenya is served by M-Pesa-funded local platforms. Pick your currency for that market's full platform comparison (minimums, funding and fees):

Alibaba as a US-dollar hedge
Because Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce & cloud company, trades in US dollars, holding it also rises in naira, cedi, rand or shilling terms whenever your local currency weakens against the dollar — so the local price here is really the US close times the live USD/NGN rate (and the equivalent for each currency). Watch that rate alongside the share price.
