💡 Key fact
Uganda has some of the lowest mobile money fees in East Africa (avg 1.2%). MTN and Airtel both accept international inbound transfers.

How receiving works in Uganda

The rail that credits the wallet. In Uganda, money is credited to MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, with national interoperability and international gateways (TerraPay, MFS Africa) linking transfer apps to both wallets. Wave is a newer low-fee entrant in this market.

The real cost: moving the funds out. Receiving is free, but Uganda levies a 0.5% excise on cash WITHDRAWALS (not on inbound transfers): the send fee and the later cash-out levy are two separate things to plan for. See the Uganda fees page.

Limits and receive flow. MTN MoMo Uganda caps each transaction at UGX 7M and the day at UGX 10M. Mobile money fees here are among East Africa's lowest (about 1.2% on average), with MTN and Airtel both accepting international arrivals. The UK and the East African diaspora dominate the sources, and wallet registration needs a national ID to raise your receiving limits.
