How receiving works in Rwanda
The rail that credits the wallet. In Rwanda, money is credited to MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, in an ecosystem Kigali has pushed hard toward cashless. The country scores 92/100 on RemitSCOPE's MobileRemit Index, among Africa's most advanced for receiving international funds.
The real cost: moving the funds out. Receiving is free. Because the country encourages merchant payment from the wallet, keeping received money to pay (rather than cashing out) is the norm here and avoids the banded cash-out fees. See the Rwanda fees page.
Limits and receive flow. MTN MoMo Rwanda caps each transaction at RWF 2M and the day at RWF 4M. The main sources of inbound funds are the United States, the United Kingdom and Belgium. Rwanda's cashless push means many recipients spend received funds directly at merchants by QR code, without ever cashing out.
