About the US Dollar

The US Dollar (USD, $) is the world's primary reserve currency and the de facto reference rate for most African remittance pricing. It is issued by the Federal Reserve System and subdivided into 100 cents. For African routes, the USD plays two distinct roles: as the on-the-wire settlement currency that originating remittance providers use to hedge between markets, and as the unit of account that diaspora senders most often think in. When operators quote a USD-to-local-currency rate, the difference between that rate and the interbank mid-market — the spread — is where most of the route's cost is hidden, often dwarfing the visible send fee. For receivers in countries with thin USD interbank markets such as Sierra Leone or Mozambique, the published rate can lag the interbank reference by several percentage points.

About the Ethiopian Birr

The Ethiopian Birr (ETB, Br) is the official currency of Ethiopia, issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The Birr is subdivided into 100 santim. Ethiopia operated a heavily managed exchange-rate regime for many years, with a wide gap between the official and parallel-market Birr rates. In July 2024 the National Bank moved to a market-determined exchange rate as part of a broader IMF-supported reform programme; the Birr devalued sharply — roughly 30% against the USD in the days following the policy shift — and the official window subsequently converged closer to where the parallel market had been trading. For diaspora inflows to Telebirr and the M-Pesa Ethiopia rollout, the post-reform Birr rate is materially more competitive than under the prior administered regime.

How to send US Dollar to Ethiopia

For transfers from United States to Ethiopia, the competitive options in 2026 are mobile-first remitters (Sendwave, LemFi, TapTap Send, Lemonade Finance), aggregators (Wise, WorldRemit, Remitly) and direct operator rails (MTN MoMo, Orange Money, M-Pesa Global). All-in cost depends on amount, receiving wallet and day. Compare options side by side on our Ethiopia inbound transfer page.

FX Watch · USD/ETB

Ethiopia moved from a heavily administered exchange-rate regime to a market-determined Birr in July 2024 under an IMF-supported reform programme. The Birr devalued approximately 30% against the USD in the days immediately following the policy shift, narrowing the previously wide gap between the official and parallel-market USD-ETB rates. For diaspora flows landing in Telebirr and on the M-Pesa Ethiopia platform launched by Safaricom, the post-reform USD-ETB rate is materially more competitive and tracks the daily National Bank reference closely. Users should still expect more volatility than before given that the exchange rate now floats; the recently agreed Dahabshiil + M-Pesa partnership has further improved last-mile cost on the UK and Gulf routes.
