The Indian rupee is managed by the Reserve Bank of India, which smooths volatility through intervention. Oil prices (India is a big importer), foreign-investment flows and remittances from the vast Indian diaspora drive the rate.
About the Indian Rupee
The Indian Rupee (INR, ₹) is issued by the Reserve Bank of India and is subdivided into 100 paise. India is one of Africa's largest trading partners — bilateral trade is on the order of $100 billion a year, having roughly doubled over five years — so the rupee is a genuine trade currency across the continent, not just a remittance unit. South Africa is India's single largest African trade partner, followed by Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya and others; the goods range from pharmaceuticals and refined petroleum to vehicles, machinery and agricultural products. The rupee also matters to the large Indian-origin communities in Southern and East Africa — well over a million people of Indian descent in South Africa, with significant populations in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mauritius — who move money and price goods in both directions. Direct INR/Africa interbank quotes are limited, so most rates are computed through the US dollar.
About the Euro
The Euro (EUR, €) is the official currency of 20 European Union member states and the anchor of one of the most consequential fixed-peg arrangements in African monetary history. The Euro is issued by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and is the second-largest reserve currency after the USD. Two African monetary unions — the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA / XOF) and the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC / XAF) — peg their CFA francs to the EUR at the fixed rate of 655.957 CFA = 1 EUR. The peg has been in continuous operation since the 1999 introduction of the Euro, and replaced the prior French franc peg. For diaspora remitters in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Germany, the EUR is the dominant send currency for the WAEMU and CEMAC routes.
