About the Euro

The Euro (EUR, €) is the official currency of 20 European Union member states and the anchor of one of the most consequential fixed-peg arrangements in African monetary history. The Mozambican Metical (MZN, MT) is the official currency of Mozambique, issued by the Bank of Mozambique. The current Metical was introduced in July 2006 at a rate of 1 new Metical for 1,000 old Meticais as part of a redenomination intended to simplify accounting after years of inflation. Subdivided into 100 centavos, the Metical operates under a managed-float regime. The currency is structurally exposed to LNG-related FX inflows tied to the country's Rovuma Basin gas development and to coal export receipts; the timing of those flows materially shapes interbank liquidity. For diaspora and remittance flows to M-Pesa Mozambique and Mkesh, the formal-channel Metical rate stays close to the interbank reference, and Mozambique applies no specific government levy on mobile-money transactions, leaving the all-in cost competitive.
