Crypto in Zambia: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium
Regulatory testing underway (BoZ/SEC)
Zambia has taken an exploratory stance: the Central Bank (BoZ) and the securities regulator announced in 2023 that they were testing crypto technology to build a framework, while warning the public. Crypto is not legal tender and remains unlicensed, but the country is positioning itself as a regulatory testbed.
Buying and cashing out. Trades are peer-to-peer over MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and Zamtel Kwacha, and through regional gateways. Lacking a licensed local exchange, Zambians rely on mobile money to move between kwacha and crypto.
Spot vs P2P premium. Because the kwacha is volatile and tied to the copper price, USDT shows a variable P2P premium that widens when the kwacha slides, reflecting demand for dollar cover.
Stablecoin usage. Zambians use USDT to preserve savings against kwacha slides and to settle cross-border purchases, with the market smaller and less liquid than Nigeria's or Kenya's. Importers of Chinese and South African goods use it to pay suppliers without queueing at the bank for foreign currency.
These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/ZMW exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/ZMW exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Zambia, see the Zambia page.
