Crypto in Uganda: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium
Unregulated, repeated warnings
Uganda has yet to legislate on crypto. The Central Bank (BoU) has repeatedly cautioned that digital currencies hold no legal status and fall outside its oversight, though it has not banned ownership. Users carry the full risk themselves, with no consumer-protection backstop.
Buying and cashing out. P2P funded by MTN MoMo and Airtel Money is the main channel, via pan-African platforms like Yellow Card and international P2P marketplaces. There is no licensed local exchange; cash-in and cash-out happen in shillings over mobile money.
Spot vs P2P premium. USDT trades at a light-to-moderate premium on Uganda's P2P market, with real dollar demand but a shilling that remains relatively accessible to exchange.
Stablecoin usage. Usage is mostly cross-border — paying regional suppliers and settling freelancers — and acts as a dollar store of value for those wary of shilling volatility.
These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/UGX exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/UGX exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Uganda, see the Uganda page.
