Crypto in Tanzania: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium

Official caution, growing use

Tanzania has swung between wariness and openness: the Central Bank (BoT) warned against crypto, before the government — at presidential urging — directed the country to prepare for cryptocurrency as early as 2021. There is still no formal licensing regime; holding and trading happen in a grey zone.

Buying and cashing out. Buying is mostly P2P and via gateways like Yellow Card, funded through Vodacom M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Mixx by Yas. With no licensed local exchanges, mobile-money-funded P2P is the dominant channel.

Spot vs P2P premium. Tanzania's P2P market shows a moderate USDT premium, reflecting dollar demand in a shilling that faces periodic stress, without reaching naira-scale gaps.

Stablecoin usage. USDT mainly serves importers and traders settling foreign suppliers and working around dollar scarcity, plus East African diaspora remittances.

These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/TZS exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/TZS exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Tanzania, see the Tanzania page.
