Crypto in Nigeria: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium
Regulated (SEC) — bank access restored
Nigeria is one of Africa's largest crypto markets. The Central Bank (CBN) barred banks from serving crypto platforms in 2021, then lifted that ban in late 2023; the SEC now regulates digital assets through its ARIP framework and the Investments and Securities Act 2024, which explicitly recognises crypto as securities.
Buying and cashing out. Because the naira is under exchange-control, most buying happens via P2P rather than card. Binance was the dominant venue until its 2024 standoff with the authorities; since then platforms like Bybit, OKX and local players (Quidax, Busha, Yellow Card) have gained share, with settlement over instant NIP naira bank transfers.
Spot vs P2P premium. USDT routinely trades at a PREMIUM on Nigeria's P2P market: when the official naira diverges from the parallel market, buyers pay above the spot rate to obtain digital dollars — the very same premium seen between the CBN rate and the street market. The P2P figure shown above (+3.0% vs spot) reflects exactly this dynamic.
Stablecoin usage. In Nigeria, USDT functions as a dollar substitute: a hedge against naira depreciation, payment for imports and freelancing, and remittance settlement. It is one of the countries where stablecoins weigh most heavily in everyday retail use worldwide.
These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/NGN exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/NGN exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Nigeria, see the Nigeria page.
