Crypto in Mozambique: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium
Unregulated, Banco de Moçambique warnings
Mozambique has no crypto framework: the Banco de Moçambique has warned that cryptocurrencies are not legal tender and carry risk, with no licensing regime. Holding and trading happen in a grey zone, in a small market led by M-Pesa.
Buying and cashing out. Access is peer-to-peer, settled over Vodacom M-Pesa, e-Mola and mKesh plus international gateways. With no licensed local exchange, mobile money is the rail in and out of metical.
Spot vs P2P premium. Because the metical faces periodic stress, USDT shows a moderate P2P premium reflecting dollar demand, without reaching the scale of heavily exchange-controlled markets.
Stablecoin usage. Mozambican usage is mostly cross-border — neighbouring South Africa being the main remittance source via mineworkers — and a dollar store for importers and traders. Liquidity stays concentrated in Maputo and along the South African corridor, with the interior relying more on cashing out to metical at the local M-Pesa agent.
These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/MZN exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/MZN exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Mozambique, see the Mozambique page.
