Crypto in Ghana: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium

Framework pending (Bank of Ghana) — not yet licensed

Ghana has not banned crypto but has not fully licensed it either: the Bank of Ghana issued a draft Virtual Asset Service Providers framework in August 2024 and is moving toward a live licensing regime, with crypto not legal tender. Holding and trading remains tolerated within a regulatory gap that is closing.

Buying and cashing out. Buying is mostly P2P and via regional gateways like Yellow Card, with funding through MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash rather than bank cards. Because the cedi is relatively convertible, the gap between spot and P2P is more moderate than in Nigeria.

Spot vs P2P premium. Ghana's P2P market generally shows a modest USDT premium rather than the double-digit gaps seen elsewhere: dollar demand exists, but lighter exchange-control on the cedi caps how large the premium gets. The P2P figure shown above (+2.0% vs spot) reflects exactly this dynamic.

Stablecoin usage. Ghanaians mainly use USDT to hedge cedi inflation spikes and for cross-border merchant and freelancer payments — mobile money integration makes cashing in and out of cedi unusually smooth.

These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/GHS exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/GHS exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Ghana, see the Ghana page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 USDT in GHS today?
1 USDT is about ₵11.65 at the spot rate, derived from USDT's US dollar price times the live USD/GHS exchange rate. On peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplaces the indicative rate is around ₵11.88, a premium over spot. These are indicative rates, not advice.
How much is 1 BTC in GHS?
1 BTC is about ₵749,633.06 at the spot rate (Bitcoin's USD price times the live USD/GHS rate). Bitcoin is volatile, so this moves continuously; the figure on this page updates as the underlying prices refresh.
Why is the P2P USDT rate higher than the official rate?
The spot rate here is USDT's dollar price times the official USD/GHS exchange rate. On peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplaces, buyers and sellers set their own prices, and demand for dollars or dollar-pegged stablecoins often pushes the P2P rate above the official one, the same premium you see between official and parallel-market FX. The P2P figure is community-sourced and varies by platform, merchant and time.
Is USDT pegged to the dollar?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar one-to-one, so its USD price stays very close to $1. That is why the USDT local rate on this page is essentially the live USD/GHS exchange rate. It can deviate slightly from $1 in stressed markets.
Is crypto legal in Ghana?
Ghana has not banned crypto but has not fully licensed it either: the Bank of Ghana issued a draft Virtual Asset Service Providers framework in August 2024 and is moving toward a live licensing regime, with crypto not legal tender. Holding and trading remains tolerated within a regulatory gap that is closing.
How do people buy crypto in Ghana?
Buying is mostly P2P and via regional gateways like Yellow Card, with funding through MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash rather than bank cards. Because the cedi is relatively convertible, the gap between spot and P2P is more moderate than in Nigeria.
What is USDT used for in Ghana?
Ghanaians mainly use USDT to hedge cedi inflation spikes and for cross-border merchant and freelancer payments — mobile money integration makes cashing in and out of cedi unusually smooth.
Are these crypto rates official?
No. They are live indicative rates for information only: crypto US-dollar prices from a public market data source, converted using the live USD/GHS exchange rate this site already tracks. They are not a quote, not advice, and we do not buy, sell or facilitate any crypto transaction.
