Crypto in Egypt: regulation, exchanges and the P2P premium
Banned (Central Bank / fatwa)
Egypt is one of the most restrictive markets: the 2020 banking law prohibits issuing, trading or promoting cryptocurrencies without a Central Bank (CBE) licence, none of which has been granted, and a Dar al-Ifta fatwa declared crypto trading haram. Crypto is effectively banned.
Buying and cashing out. Despite the ban, use persists via informal P2P and international platforms, funded in Egyptian pounds by transfer or mobile wallet. There is no legal local exchange; activity is underground, at legal risk.
Spot vs P2P premium. With the Egyptian pound having undergone sharp devaluations and a wide parallel market, USDT trades at a clear PREMIUM on Egypt's P2P market, reflecting the scramble for dollars in an exchange-controlled economy.
Stablecoin usage. USDT is mainly sought as a hedge against pound devaluation and a way to save in dollars, despite illegality — demand fed by the large remittances of Egypt's Gulf diaspora.
These rates are derived, not separately quoted: we take each coin's US dollar price and multiply by the live USD/EGP exchange rate this site already publishes. That means the USDT rate here equals the USD/EGP exchange rate (because USDT tracks the dollar). For mobile money fees in Egypt, see the Egypt page.
